Advice from H.E. Lho Karma Ratna Rinpoche for Retreat Participants

H.E. Lho Ratna Rinpoche graciously gave online teachings and transmissions to the students and practitioners participating in 100-day, 6-month, or one-year retreats on Galiano Island, that began in mid-October 2024 under the guidance of Lama Chökyi Gyaltsen (Lama Mark Webber).

Lama Gyaltsen believes that the depth of Rinpoche’s Dharma teachings is of great benefit to a broader community of dedicated practitioners, especially those on the Vajrayana path. With Ratna Rinpoche’s permission, the recordings of these precious teachings are now available on the NYBCC website.

Class 1 – October 28, 2024

The Role of the Spiritual Teacher
The Importance of Our Attitude Toward Our Lama

“One who has this grasping thought that the Lama is an ordinary being will never succeed in actualizing the Yidam and receiving the common and supreme accomplishments, no matter what deity he or she meditates upon. ... This is how it is, whether you like it or not.
You may get the knowledge. But that knowledge is empty without the wisdom. Knowledge and wisdom have to be together, have to be in union. Without this (right attitude) you cannot bring forth the wisdom, transform the knowledge into wisdom. It’s not possible.”

Class 2 – October 28, 2024

The Two Main Slogans of the Drikung Kargyu Teachings
On the Importance of Bodhicitta and Interdependence

“The Teachings of Drikung basically can be explained in these two slogans:

* Bodhicitta is the supreme wheel of protection.
* Drikungpa, masters of interdependence.”

“Mahamudra, Dzogchen, or the Middle Way—they are just words, or like a body. Bodhicitta is like the soul or the consciousness which gives life to that body. Bodhicitta makes a union between the words and your mind.”
— Lho Ratna Rinpoche

Class 3 – October 29, 2024

The Two Main Slogans of the Drikung Kargyu Teachings, continued

“Interdependence helps you to stabilize your mind and it allows you to understand the true nature. Interdependence is like a guard. If you have proper knowledge and understanding of it, then it works like a guard. …
And more than that. A proper understanding of interdependence will give you peace of mind, relaxation, a different attitude. It will open your mind and you will feel great about whatever circumstance arises.”

Commentaries on "The Heart Treasure of the Enlightened Ones" by Patrul Rinpoche

Four Hybrid Dharma Classes (Online & In-Person)
Given on August 26–27, 2023
In the Namgyal Choling Gompa, Galiano Island, BC, Canada
“One can see emptiness like an empty space, as something that is void. But I see emptiness in the form of interdependent originations.”
Starting the Four Boundless Contemplations with impartiality/equanimity: “Of these Four Contemplations, I find impartiality is the most difficult. Of course, it may not be pleasant. But to start with impartiality, one will be able to develop boundless love and the two other contemplations easily.”
“The Ten Virtuous Deeds do not apply only to Buddhists. They apply to all human beings, whatever you believe in. We all want to live a wholesome life. And just eating wholesome organic food will not help. You have to engage in these Ten Virtuous Deeds or actions.”
“There are three kinds of retreat or (self-)isolation: The outer—isolation of one’s body from people—, the inner—isolation from speech, outer speech and inner speech—, and the secret isolation. The secret isolation is looking inwardly and checking the faults within ourselves, and a kind of pointing out to the faults that lie within us. Then resting in this uncontrived, unaltered, a kind of naked awareness.”
“This (transmission) has been a very good practice and reflection upon my own practice, upon myself. It is not a teaching; it is just a reminder to myself and a reminder to my fellow Dharma brothers and sisters – like an echo… I have kind of just provided you with this auspicious interdependency. Please don’t just leave it till my understanding or till the oral transmission. Like the practice of ‘The Words of my Precious Teacher,’ which you can use in your daily practices, apply these verses to your mind.”
